In my case, no.

I suffer from rather severe depression and the agoraphobia that comes with it. Drugs help, but I suffered from it too long and the mental habits that I've formed are fairly ingrained now.

So Facebook, and the internet in general are a lifeline. I can easily keep track of friends and interact with them in safety.

I remember what things were like before the internet became ubiquitous. I'd spend weeks pretty much locked in a room save for trips to the library. I didn't have a phone (couldn't afford it) and so had no one to talk to.

That's lonely.

I'm no fan of Facebook, nor was I ever. Social media has alot of potential. But I do not trust Facebook specifically. So I'm not the least bit interested in defending it. Having said that...

Whenever a new study comes out saying how technology makes us lonelier, disconnected, violent sociopaths, etc, I take it with a grain of salt. There has been too many agenda driven "studies" on the subject, pushed by both the left and right (video game violence, anyone?), for me to take them seriously.

In a way, that does plausibly share some blame for anti-vaccination, creationism, climate-change denial, and anti-science attitudes in general. When the proverbial well of science is poisoned, the snake-oil salesmen come out of the woodwork, with their guns blazing in a confusing flurry of overextended and/or mixed-metaphors.

...

Wow! Not only is it easy to talk out of my ass, it feels real good. I can see why people write entire articles and op-eds this way.

I have been able to connect with people that I knew 20 years ago.

I would never take the time to keep up a paper correspondence with this many people.

Ms. Vickers should have had some real life friends, as well. It's sad that she didn't.
